General information
Pre-Gradings
Pre-Gradings are a mandatory session prior to the Grading, in which students are observed to determine whether they are ready for their next grade. If they are deemed to be ready, students receive an invite to the grading.
Kup Gradings
Taekwondo has coloured belts ranks called Kup grades, new student begin at 10th Kup (white belt) and advance to 1st Kup (black tag). Kup Gradings are how students progress through the different ranks, these promotion opportunities tests students knowledge of basic technique, Poomsae (patterns), self-defence and sparring skills, what students are tested on will vary in relation to the students grade .
Kup Gradings generally occur around every 4 months, dates are posted within the Dojang at the beginning of the year. To participate in this students must have trained a minimum of 20 sessions before being eligible to grade, and have an up-to-date British Taekwondo Licence. Upon completion of a grading, if they have passed students will receive their new belt and a certificate on the same day. Payment for Gradings must be paid prior to the grading day.

Dan Gradings
It takes approximately 3 years of training to achieve a black belt from a beginner level. When a student first achieves a black belt they will be a first Dan (degree), or first Poom if the student is aged 14 or younger. Students will progress through the Dan system over time learning more advanced techniques, higher Poomsae and deepening their understanding of the theory and values of Taekwondo. There is a waiting period between each Dan promotion, this is:
- black tag to 1st Dan = 6 months
- 1st Dan to 2nd Dan = 1 year
- 2nd Dan to 3rd Dan = 2 years
- 3rd Dan to 4th Dan = 3 years
- 4th Dan to 5th Dan = 4 years
- 5th Dan to 6th Dan = 5 years
- 6th Dan to 7th Dan = 6 years
- 7th Dan to 8th Dan = 7 years
- 8th Dan to 9th Dan = 8 years
British Taekwondo members who are residents in the UK are required to take their Dan grades at one of the official British Taekwondo Gradings, and must possess an up-to-date British Taekwondo Licence. Additionally, student must attend at least one technical seminar before they can grade, this allows students the benefit of working with new people and the experience training in an unfamiliar environment similar to that of a grading. Information regarding when and where technical seminars are taking place will be released when it is known. Upon passing, all British taekwondo members will receive a new belt, certificate and a Kukkiwon certificate from the world Taekwondo Headquarters in Korea.
